If you would like to post some of your "recollections" about favorite places or times in the Dearborn area during your school years, please e-mail me and I will add them to the site. The following recollections were sent in by Frank (Biff) Wilhelme) Enjoy.... Mary Miller  marymiller@mchsi.com

Here are a few of my memories about three institutions from our Dearborn youth:

Calvin Matinee:

A common source of entertainment for kids was the Wednesday (summers) and Saturday matinees at the Calvin Theater on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn.  Parents must have loved it.  The Saturday program included two feature films and a selection of cartoons and short subjects.  We must have out of our parents hair for 4-5 hours.  Short subjects were
serialized adventures that ran from week to week.  The most popular one featured Ming the Merciless, a cruel emperor who was in constant conflict with a “great white hunter” type played by Buster Crab and
his entourage that included a pretty heroin and assorted sidekicks. All of this was yours for the princely sum of 12 cents!  Popcorn was
an extra quarter.  Here are a sampling of movies we saw:

Saturday, July 14, 1956: Killer is Loose w/ Joseph Cotton and Rhonda Fleming and Riding High w/Randolf Scott

Wednesday, July 18, 1956 Tarzan and the Ape w/ Johnny Wissemulller and Monster and the Ape, part  2 (short subject serial)

The site that I have listed below has been submitted by Biff Wilhelme. He is quite the historian and has sent in this great video of Camp Dearborn. I am sure that everyone has at least one wonderful memory of Camp Dearborn and you should really enjoy this one. Thanks, Biff

Seashore Pool and the Sip n' Nip Drive In:

My most memorable food purchase was that frozen custard cone (10c) at the Sip n’ Nip drive-in at the corner of Sheridan and Telegraph.  My wife, Judy, DHS '64 and I continue our eternal search for the modern day equivalent of that frozen custard!  The Sip n’ Nip was right on the way to Seashore pool at Levagood Park.  Seashore was another major summer attraction.  The pool was large and circular with shallow and deep areas.  The deep area was separated by a strong permanent iron fence with periodic openings.  In the center of the deep area was a diving tower.  Gaining both parent and lifeguard permission to swim to the tower was a major right of passage.  Your reward for this new level of freedom and accomplishment was to have to fend for yourself among the older kids who thought they owned the tower.  Despite all of its challenges, we could not get enough of Seashore Pool and, of course, those frozen custards!!

Angelo’s Pizzeria

One of my fondest memories is Angelo’s Pizzeria on Michigan Avenue.  It was here that many of us tasted pizza for the first time.  The pizza was delicious.  I still don’t think I have found a pizza to match it.  The crust was just crisp enough and the toppings were smothered in a loads of cheese and, of course, lots of pepperoni.  I always accompanied my pizza with a glass of milk.  For some reason that was the perfect drink for the best pizza ever.  A lot of times, we would go there after games, Friday night sock hops or just for the fun of it.  We would have great conversations and be in a celebratory mood if we had just won a game.   If anyone has found a pizza to match Angelo’s I want to hear about it.  Until then, my mouth will water whenever I think about Angelo’s pizza.     Submitted by Mary Falk
